A Home Business Is Not For Everyone

Are you considering starting your own home business? If you are, then there are certain characteristics, you should review to see if this endeavor is right for you. Although, each sign does not guarantee success or failure, they will play a part in adding to the difficulties of a start-up business.

If you are honest with yourself and recognize your short-comings, you will be able to overcome the areas you need to work on. Then you can come back to your working from home idea.

1. Habitually disorganized:

It will create problems if you constantly have papers lying around and can never locate what you want, and don't pay your bills on time because you are a lacking a system. You need to get organized. You don't have to be anally organized, just have a system that works.

2. Indecisive:

In business, you have to make a lot of decisions. Once the decision is made, you have to implement it and wait to see the results of your actions. If you take a long time deciding, the opportunity may pass you by.

3. Resistance to change:

Business is a brand-new arena. The economy is in crisis. Marketing practices are changing, and business is always adapting in terms of technology, product demand, processes and distribution. If you are resistant to change your business will begin to deteriorate, and eventually die.

When you own a small business, you have to forget about familiarities and deal with new things fearlessly and objectively each day.

4. Afraid of responsibility:

If you are considered by your co-workers and family as the King or Queen of excuses, a home business may not be a good idea. A large part of the reason you want to work from home is so you can be the boss.

Being the boss means that you are responsible for all aspects of your business. Your customers and investors don't want to hear “excuses for failure,” they want to hear “reasons for success.” You can practice taking on responsibility in your personal life before you open your own business.

5. Key motivation is money

I am sure you have heard at least one successful person say that when they started out with their business, it had nothing to do with making lots of money. They chose something because they loved it. An example of this is the late Steve Job of Apple.

If you’re only in it for the money, you will soon find your motivation waning. It takes time to be successful and failures are part of the process. It is your love of what you do, your desire to succeed, and inner motivation that will keep you going. Especially during the low-periods.

6. Mood swings

If you go between being depressed and unrealistically positive, then it will be a bumpy ride for you in business. Each minor set-back you face can't totally depress you, because ups and downs are commonplace.

On the other hand, if you get overly excited about possibilities and don't look at them realistically, you may scare people off. You need to be in a happy medium between the two in order to deal with challenges you will encounter as a business owner.

7. Long list of incomplete tasks

If you are the type of person who starts projects and never completes them. You should stay away from business until you can take a task from beginning to completion. Ideas are wonderful, but they need action to come to life.

8. Seclusion:

If you are a social butterfly and like the comradery of a team, then a home business may not be for you. You will at some point in time find yourself alone. You won't have a co-worker that you can walk over to their desk and chat. You won't have someone telling you what has to be done and when. You will be completely left to your vices.

9. Self-discipline:

You may be drawn to the idea of being your own boss. Maybe you want to start a business so you can be independent, and live without limits. However, you will find that you have to set up some rules and adhere to them. You have to practice self-discipline so that you get the job done and create and run a company that can fend for itself.

10. Lack of support:

Owning a business is hard. If you don't have a support system in your friends and family, it will be an uphill lonely battle. Your business won't run on its own, and you will have to be the one to drag it along, with all of your personal weaknesses. You need personal and emotional support or at least a mentor to call for advice to get you through the tough times.

11. Follow through:

If you have a hard time following through with what you say you will do, it will dampen the chances of success in your business. Following through is the backbone of any business. You have to keep promises that you make, stand behind your products or services, follow through with guarantees. Even if you get away with it at first, eventually customers will realize they can't trust you.

Although the above may be obstacles, they can be overcome. I know this because I had to deal with a lot of them and am still struggling with some. Do have any obstacles that I forgot to mention? Please feel free to leave a comment.

Having no capital saved up can also be a challenge when starting a home-based business. Also, if you start a home business without having first tested it at least on a part-time basis, you could fail quickly. Good article.
